Vehicle Details: The 2012 Toyota Camry

Last updated 6 years ago

America’s bestseller just got a whole lot better.
Just how do you make America’s favorite and best-selling midsize sedan even better? That’s a challenge Toyota has faced each time it has redesigned the Camry, the platinum standard in midsize sedans. But once again, Toyota has delivered a new benchmark for the class by improving on every attribute that made the previous model such a tremendous success. A look at key 2012 Toyota Camry details tells the story.

The 2012 Toyota Camry is primed to beat the competition by providing seemingly improbable benefit combinations: More powerful performance, yet better fuel economy; more responsive handling, yet even smoother ride quality and increased roominess, yet within the same vehicle size as before. New infotainment options offer access to more music and connectivity, yet are designed to minimize driver distraction. Finally, Toyota also gave the new 2012 Camry a sportier, more elegant design that evokes luxury models costing much more while an MSRP starting at $21,955 retains famous Toyota value.

The 2012 Camry delivers more responsive performance and reduced operating costs, whether you choose the four-cylinder or the optional V6 engines. The revised 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine delivers 178 hp, nine more than the 2011 model, yet it returns EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 25 mpg city/35 highway/28 combined (compared to 22/32/26 for the 2011 model). Revisions to the six-speed automatic transmission also get some of the credit for the increased efficiency.

Some midsize competitors have discontinued V6 engine options; Toyota instead increased the efficiency of its available 3.5-liter V6 for the Camry. The 21/30/25 mpg city/highway/combined fuel economy ratings with this engine make Camry the most fuel-efficient six-cylinder model in its class. The engine’s 268 hp also makes the Camry an exciting performer.

The Camry Hybrid joins the “higher performance-plus-higher economy” club for 2012, too. The Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain gets a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, for a combined system output of 200 hp. Varying power between the gas engine and electric motor, or combining both as needed, the 2012 Camry Hybrid delivers a 30 percent-plus boost in EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings at 43 mpg city/39 mpg highway/41 mpg combined. Along with reduced overall vehicle weight, the changes make the Camry Hybrid quicker for 2012, with zero-to-60 mph acceleration in just 7.6 seconds.

The Camry Hybrid trunk gains 2.1 cubic feet of space thanks to a smaller, more efficient battery pack and other changes to the electric system. As another bonus, the Camry Hybrid sounds even quieter for 2012.

The 2012 Camry design exudes performance, confidence and elegance. A redesigned interior yields more room and a greater feeling of roominess thanks to enhanced outward visibility. Trim panels that more closely follow the structure beneath, along with reshaped seats and other detail changes, also help make the car feel more spacious.

Details like soft-texture trim surfaces throughout and stitching on the instrument panel create a more luxurious-feeling interior in the 2012 Camry. The tilt/telescoping steering wheel offers a 33 percent greater range of tilt, and the driver’s seat gains an additional half-inch of height adjustment, for a total of 2.4 inches. Such changes, while seemingly small individually, add up to a noticeably more comfortable car in every day driving.

Toyota offers the all-new 2012 Camry in entry-level L, value-driven LE, premium XLE and sporty SE models, the latter with sport-tuned suspension and exclusive design and interior features. The Camry Hybrid comes in LE and XLE models.

Get ready for some seriously powerful infotainment performance in the 2012 Toyota Camry, which offers more versatile standard audio systems featuring standard Bluetooth® connectivity and iPod® integration. However, the available new Entune™ multimedia system takes center stage.

Equipped with Entune, the Camry offers you first-ever support for new mobile apps such as Bing, OpenTable and In addition, you can access useful travel-related services including live reports for weather and traffic, fuel information (location and price) and the latest stocks and sports news. With digital music options growing, Entune can keep you in tune with access to iHeartRadio’s 750-plus stations and the Pandora Internet music service.

The available 2012 Camry audio systems that integrate Entune also feature an advanced voice recognition system. Using easy, conversational commands, you can enjoy audio read back for text messages. For safety, you can respond using pre-set “quick reply messages” such as, “I’m driving and will reply later.” An available new JBL GreenEdge™ audio system produces clearer, more powerful sound than comparable systems while consuming less electric power, thus also contributing to improved fuel efficiency.

That’s just for starters. The 2012 Toyota Camry once again raises the ante for what a midsize sedan can offer. Come in to Jerry’s Toyota in Baltimore Maryland, and see for yourself just how high the new Camry has leapfrogged the competition.
