Improved technology makes the xD better than ever.
The Scion xD urban subcompact heads into 2012 with its aggressive styling intact, plenty of standard equipment and a huge menu of options for easy personalization.
The five-passenger xD stands apart from the small-car crowd with a wide, aggressive stance wrapped in muscular body work with accentuated wheel arches. The upright posture of the xD gives the tall seating position that many drivers appreciate with plenty of head- and legroom both front and back.
The standard audio system for the xD is provided by Pioneer® and features a three-line organic electroluminescent (OEL) display to show song title information when playing back MP3, AAC or WMA files from CDs or USB media players. Users of iPods and iPhones can even navigate through their musical options directly from the 160-watt head unit. Six standard speakers can be augmented with an external amplifier and subwoofer connected to the built-in RCA output. New standard features for 2012 are Bluetooth® HandsFree system and HD Radio™.
The Advanced Sound Retriever (ASR) circuit provides a rich, deep quality to playback of digital audio files. Audiophiles can opt for a 200-watt Pioneer® premium audio system that adds a 5.8-inch full-color touchscreen with iTunes tagging, Pandora® Internet Radio through iPhone and six RCA outlets.
The 2012 xD is motivated by a 16-valve 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) to help it achieve 128 hp and 125 lb/ft of torque. VVT-i continuously varies the opening and closing of the valves to help optimize the breathing under all speed and load conditions. Internal friction is reduced thanks to the inclusion of a roller-rocker system and lightweight pistons, and piston-cooling oil jets. The result is reduced emissions and increased fuel economy across the board. Expect up to 27 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway.
The engine is available with either a slick-shifting five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic. The relatively short wheelbase and wide track of the front-wheel drive xD provide an athletic stance. A MacPherson strut front and torsion bar rear suspension layout with standard 16-inch wheels, gives the xD a combination of smooth ride and nimble handling.
The xD comes in a mono-spec configuration with plenty of standard features and a long list of available accessories that enable owners to personalize their new ride. The very affordable sticker price includes the STAR Safety System™ and all the convenience features contemporary car buyers expect. On the preventative safety side, that includes four-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with Traction Control (TRAC) and Brake Assist to help reduce stopping distances during emergency braking.
In the event of a collision, the xD protects occupants with seatbelt pretensioners, dual-stage front airbags and side protection from front seat-mounted and roof-mounted airbags. The front seats include head restraints with whiplash protection while the rear seat features three-across head restraints.
As a Scion driver, you can pick from a huge menu of accessories to transform your xD into a one-of-a-kind ride. You can add 16-inch alloy wheels or any of three covers for the standard wheels. A paint protection film can be added to the front of the car to prevent stone chips, and foglamps and carbon fiber B-pillar appliques give the xD a more upscale appearance. At the rear, a spoiler can be added at the top of the liftgate while a bumper protector is available to protect against the scratches when loading and unloading.
Inside, available convenience features include an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a center armrest, an overhead console box to store sunglasses and other articles and all-weather mats for the floor and cargo area. The cargo area can also be made more useful with accessories like a privacy cover, a tray to provide protection against wet or dirty objects and a net to hold loose items in place. Remote engine start is another great feature, allowing you to warm up or cool down the inside of your xD before heading out into the elements.
Toyota Racing Development (TRD) also offers a vast array of functional and visual accessories to help an xD stand out. Starting with the rolling stock, TRD offers various alloy wheels. TRD lowering springs, sway bars, brake upgrades and even a limited-slip differential can transform the xD into a mini performance machine.
Scion owners can drive their cars with confidence thanks to three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper and five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranties. For the first two years/25,000 miles, new owners can visit any Scion dealership for complimentary scheduled maintenance thanks to Scion Service Boost, which also includes 24-hour roadside assistance.
The 2012 Scion xD starts at an MSRP of $15,345. Contact Jerry’s Toyota Scion in Baltimore County Maryland today for more information.
