Scion iQ to be released as Hybrid?

Last updated 5 years ago

If you take a trip to the European Union you will find that European buyers can opt to buy the 2012 Scion iQ equipped with a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine which is rated at the equivalent of 54.7 mpg in Euro-cycle testing (which is about 20-percent optimistic when compared to the EPA’s numbers).

To European buyer there’s even a 1.4-liter diesel version available in Europe. This model is able to push out 58.8 mpg in Euro-cycle testing, Impressive right?

While the two extra models might make us in the American market a little jealous, Scion has been hinting at bringing a Hybrid model to the iQ lineup, which could potentially be distributed world wide.

The American model of the 2012 Scion iQ is capable of bringing in 36 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway. Those numbers are based on the iQ’s 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine, which is the only option for U.S. buyers. So how would you feel about a Hybrid iQ?

There aren’t many details on this project; however Britain's Autocar has confirmed that Toyota has indeed produced a two-cylinder gasoline engine, combined to a hybrid drive system that might be in production before 2020.

Jon Williams. Toyota Great Britain’s managing director, has confirmed that the powertrain had been developed for “an existing or future car” and not just a concept.

While it is much too soon to run to your Scion dealer for one of these bad boys, as Williams admits that no solid plans in place for hybrid powertrain, we can’t help but to wonder with great curiosity what a hybrid engine would do for the Scion iQ.

Will it perform better? Will they need to sacrifice any features to fit a hybrid engine? And finally with the iQ’s already impressive gas mileage what would a Hybrid iQ be able to do?

While the report of a possible Hybrid iQ brought more questions than answers, we have to admit that we are extremely curious as to what a Hybrid iQ can do.

Stay tuned over the next few months! If there are any more details you can bet your bottom dollar we will report it!
